Looking at the stance that US President Donald Trump is taking, it seems that he is not going to accept any of NATO’s arguments on the issue of Greenland. They have claimed that if NATO exists today, it is only because of the US president. Trump said that if he had not come to power, NATO would have ended long ago. This statement is important because of the ongoing conflict between NATO and the US President.

‘If it wasn’t for me, NATO would have gone into the dustbin’

Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social – “No person or president has done as much for NATO as I have. If I had not come, NATO would not exist today. It would have gone into the dustbin of history. It is very sad, but true.”

Trump made this post when he was about to go to Switzerland to participate in the World Economic Forum. Trump reiterated the same in a briefing on the one-year anniversary of his second term in the White House. He said he had done more for NATO than any other leader. He also raised the question whether NATO countries will help America in times of crisis?

“We know the US will help NATO countries, but I really doubt they will help us,” Trump said. He also added that NATO should treat the US fairly, as the US spends a lot on the alliance.

Why is Trump bent on breaking the NATO alliance?

Trump’s statements come at a time when tensions are rising over Greenland. Several NATO member states have openly opposed Trump’s desire for US control over Greenland. European leaders in Davos have warned that any unilateral move could damage trans-Atlantic relations.

Before the Davos trip, Trump created a stir by sharing some personal messages from French President Emmanuel Macron and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. In these messages, they discussed Greenland.
