A national initiative called “Hundred Million Jobs” has been launched on Monday. It aims to create 10 crore jobs in India over the next decade. This initiative comes at a time when the country is grappling with the challenge of insufficient job creation despite rapid economic growth. According to the organizers, the campaign was announced by software industry body NASSCOM co-founder Harish Mehta, global entrepreneur network The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE) founder AJ Patel and Center for Innovation in Public Policy (CIPP) founder K. Done by Yatish Rajawat.
The founders noted that India’s working population is growing at a rate of about 12 million annually, while traditional employment sectors such as manufacturing are not expanding as expected. To take full advantage of the country’s demographic dividend, it is necessary to create 80 to 90 lakh new jobs every year. Although India is one of the world’s fastest growing major economies, employment growth has lagged behind output expansion.
The increasing use of automation and artificial intelligence (AI) has put pressure on entry-level jobs in many sectors, raising concerns that the gap between economic growth and job creation could widen.
The “10 Crore Jobs” mission places entrepreneurship, skill development and labor-related enterprises at the center of India’s employment strategy. The initiative aims to make job creation a key parameter for economic growth, thereby ensuring decentralized, sustainable and dignified livelihoods in various sectors. Harish Mehta said the initiative is a concerted effort to empower entrepreneurs, micro, small and medium enterprises and employers, creating resilient and dignified employment for the next generation through better synergy between skills, entrepreneurship, data and policy.
Meanwhile, AJ Patel said startups and small businesses, which contribute about 30 percent of India’s GDP and are the largest employers, should expand beyond metros. He emphasized that if the country is to create 80-90 lakh jobs every year, the structural barriers that make entrepreneurship viable for the common man have to be removed.
