24-year-old Sahaja Reddy Udumala, a resident of Telangana’s Jangaon district, died in a raging fire in Albany, New York on Thursday. Sahaja went to the US for higher education in 2021 and was pursuing a master’s degree at the University of Albany. She was sleeping in her room at the time of the incident and could not escape as the fire spread rapidly. According to local officials, the fire started in a nearby building and spread to Sahaja’s house within minutes.
The fire department said the fire spread quickly, giving people inside no time to recover. The Indian mission confirmed that Sahaja was badly burned and could not be saved. The Indian Consulate in New York expressed deep grief over his death. The embassy said it is in touch with the family and is providing all possible assistance in the process of repatriating the body to India. Sahaja was the eldest daughter of her family. His father, Jakar Reddy, is a TCS employee in Hyderabad, and his mother, Shelja, is a government school teacher.
Will the body be brought back?
The family says they were eagerly waiting for him to complete his studies, but now there is only grief in the house. The family has requested the central government to help bring Sahaja’s body back to India as soon as possible. Sahaja’s relatives have also started a GoFundMe campaign for financial assistance. It is being told that almost 90% of his body was burnt in the accident. Funds collected will be used for funerals, post-mortem procedures and other immediate needs. The people of Jangaon have gone to the family’s house and expressed their condolences. The entire community is in shock over this tragic incident.
