Despite lengthy discussions, the two sides failed to reach a major agreement. Once again, peace talks over disputed territories in Ukraine stalled and no decisive agreement was reached.
Russian President Vladimir Putin held an important and highly anticipated meeting with US special envoys Steve Wittkoff and Jared Kushner for nearly five hours. Expectations were high for this meeting, as the talks focused on the US peace plan. However, the result was not as expected. Despite lengthy discussions, the two sides failed to reach a major agreement. Once again, peace talks over disputed territories in Ukraine stalled and no decisive agreement was reached.
Yuri Ushakov, Putin’s senior adviser, said the talks were useful and constructive, but much work remained. He clarified that no common proposal has yet been prepared which both sides can accept. According to Ushakov, Russia is ready to accept some of the US demands, but there are many suggestions that cannot be agreed upon. According to a New York Times report, after 300 minutes of talks, no concrete agreement was reached, and no new meeting between Putin and Trump could move forward.
Just before the meeting, Putin issued a strong message to European nations, saying that Russia’s capture of the eastern Ukrainian city of Pokrovsk was a solid foundation for achieving the initial objectives of its special military operation. Putin also said that Europe is hindering the resolution of the conflict. Putin warned that we do not want war with Europe, but if Europe starts a war, we are ready. Europe’s defeat would be so sure and complete that there would be no one left to negotiate a peace settlement.
He also said Russia would step up attacks on Ukrainian ports and ships, as Ukraine recently targeted Russia’s shadow fleet, i.e. old oil tankers. Putin also took aim at Ukraine’s political leadership, saying Kiev’s leaders have become detached from the situation on the ground and are more preoccupied with internal issues and scandals.
The meeting between Steve Wittkoff and Putin was another attempt to resolve the Ukraine crisis, but five hours of talks did not produce any concrete results. US President Donald Trump’s son-in-law, Jared Kushner, also arrived in Moscow for the meeting. According to Moscow’s state news agency RIA, Witkoff visited the US Embassy shortly after the talks, but no official information was released.
