Vitamin D deficiency and cancer links found in some studies

colorectal cancer- According to a study published in September 2022 in the National Library of Medicine, vitamin D prevents abnormal growth of cells. Its deficiency can increase the risk of colorectal i.e. intestinal cancer.

Breast Cancer- According to a study published in January 2012 at the National Library of Medicine, lack of vitamin D in women may increase the risk of breast cancer.

Lung cancer- According to a study published in November 2017 in Health Journal Medicine, vitamin D deficiency weakens the immune system and increases inflammation in cells. This may increase the risk of lung cancer.

prostate cancer- According to a study published in October, 2018 at the National Library of Medicine, men may have prostate cancer when there is too much or very low vitamin D level in men.

Pancreatic Cancer- According to a study published in the Journal of Nutrition and Metabolism, if vitamin D is very low then the risk of pancreatic cancer can be high.

Why are there deficiency of vitamin D among people?

Dr. Samit Purohit says that nowadays, the main reason for rapid increase in vitamin D among people is that people spend very little time in sunlight. Vitamin D is decreasing due to lack of exposure of sunlight

If someone stays in the house or office most of the time and is not able to go in the sun, then the body does not get a chance to make vitamin D. Most such people may have deficiency of vitamin D in the body. This is because our body needs UVB rays to make vitamin D, which comes from the sun.

Not getting enough sunlight due to air pollution

If someone lives in a very polluted city or area, it can also be the cause of vitamin D deficiency. The smoke emanating from vehicles and factories increases the carbon particles present in the air. These particles absorb the UVB rays of the sun, affecting the process of vitamin D in the body.

Vitamin D is decreasing due to excessive use of sunscreen

Applying sunscreen prevents the sun’s harmful rays, but it also prevents UVB rays. UVB rays only work to make vitamin D in the body, so applying excessive sunscreen can cause vitamin D deficiency.

Excess fat stored in the body absorbs vitamin D and prevents it from reaching cells. Vitamin D deficiency is found more in obese people, because the excess fat present in the body accumulates it and the body is difficult to use it.

As our age grows, the ability to make vitamin D of the skin decreases. This problem is seen more in elderly people. So doctors often recommend them to take vitamin D supplements.

Absorption of vitamin D stops from poor gut health

Vitamin D which we take through eating or supplementation is absorbed in our stomach. If there is any stomach related disease, such as IBS i.e. irritable bull syndrome, celiac disease or cruhan disease, then vitamin D cannot reach the body properly and may be lacking.

Dr. Samit Purohit says that Indians need 1 hour of sunlight daily to maintain the level normal of vitamin D. If someone stays in the sun for about 1 hour every day, then the level of vitamin D can remain maintained. The more part of our skin comes directly in contact with sunlight, the more part it makes vitamin D. Therefore, wearing clothes and sitting in the sun are of no use. However, life should be avoided in the afternoon sun in the summer season. Follow these tips-

  • Wear a little less clothes in the morning and take sunlight.
  • Keep weight control.
  • Include milk in food.
  • Mushrooms, eggs or fish can also be eaten in food.
