Rupnagar: Politics on renovation of Sirhind canal

The operation to pave the bottom and banks of the Sirhind Canal amid the bitterly cold weather has heated up the political atmosphere. The work of paving the canal from the head works of Rupnagar to the newly constructed bridge is going on at a frantic level, which is being opposed by various social organizations and political leaders.

In the same vein, Gaurav Rana, a social activist from Lakha Sidhana and Nurpur Bedi areas, reached Rupnagar and raised questions about the government’s action to pave the canal and said that the officials of the departments who are doing the work of paving the canal in the name of increasing the capacity of the canal. The situation should be made clear to the people whether this will weaken the water level in arable lands and residential areas or not. He said that the British had deliberately kept this canal raw, which had a motive. He said that paving the canal is playing with the underground water. He said that the 400 cusec capacity Dasmesh Canal, which is being talked about to irrigate the villages of Rupnagar district, was approved on January 10-11 and the work of paving the canal has been going on for many days. He demanded from the Punjab government that the government should clarify the situation as to when the proposed Dasmesh Canal will be built and when will the people of Rupnagar constituency get water. Gurbachan Singh Bains, Kirti Kisan Morcha leader Harpreet Singh Bhatton, Punjab Morcha leader Neeraj Rana, Yadwinder Singh and Kishan Kumar were present on this occasion.

Only half a kilometer of canal bed will be paved: SDO

Canal Department SDO Lalit Garg said that the bottom of the Sirhind Canal will be left with gravel for the next 600 feet from the beginning of the canal and it will not be paved and only half a kilometer of the canal bed will be paved after that. .

With the completion of the canal, nine and a half lakh acres of land will be irrigated: Dinesh Chadha

Rupnagar MLA Dinesh Chadha also went live on Facebook and said that where the canal is being paved, pressure release valves have also been placed and through these valves water can also go underground. He claimed that 9 and a half lakh acres of land will be irrigated by making the canal clear and wide. He said that the excess water from the river was going to the Pakistan side, now that water will be used to irrigate people’s lands by increasing the capacity of the Sirhind canal, which is a big achievement of the Bhagwant Mann government.
