Surrey: Vancouver think tank remembered Punjabi novelist Gurdayal Singh on his birthday by holding a special meeting at Gulati Publishers Ltd. Surrey. On this occasion, novelist Jarnail Singh Sekha congratulated all the readers of Punjabi literature on the birthday of Gurdayal Singh and shared his memories with them. He said that Likhari Sabha was a famous literary organization of Barnala area and Gurdyal Singh was also a member of that society and he met Gurdyal Singh in that society. Gurdayal Singh initially created children’s literature through the ‘Bakalmakhud’ column. Also wrote some poems which were published under the name of Gurdayal Singh Rahi, then he wrote very good stories. When his first novel ‘Marhi Da Diwa’ was published, he gave an important turn to the Punjabi novel. After the publication of ‘Marhi Da Diwa’, Gurdayal Singh’s name became associated with ‘Marhi Da Diwa’.
Poet Mohan Gill said that Gurdayal Singh broke the prevailing concept of the hero in the Punjabi novel and made the downtrodden and common people the heroes of the Punjabi novel. In his novels, the author himself is nowhere to be seen, but only the characters appear in their natural form. ‘Mardhi Da Diwa’ and ‘Unhoy’ are his world famous masterpieces. He also did a special job of propagating the Theth Malvai language in his novels.
Englishman Brar said that when he studied at Barjindra College, Faridkot, Gurdayal Singh was also a professor in that college, but at that time we did not know that he was such a great literary man. He was indeed a great literary man of our time and he made unique footsteps in Punjabi literature. He also got the honor of getting India’s biggest literary award ‘Gyanpith’.
