National Voters’ Day: The Modi-Shah duo has ‘colossally eroded’ the independence of the Election Commission: Congress


The erosion of the institutional integrity of the Election Commission of India in the last ten years is a matter of grave national concern: Kharge; Various Congress leaders made accusations on the occasion of National Voter’s Day

The Congress on Saturday hit out at the Election Commission, saying the commission’s ‘self-congratulations’ on National Voter’s Day could hide the fact that the country’s largest election-conducting body is functioning as it is. This is not Not only is it making a ‘mockery’ of the Constitution, but it is also insulting the voters.

The opposition party also alleged that the professional approach and independence of the Election Commission had been “grossly compromised” by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah duo over the past decade. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge and various Congress leaders have said this in various posts on the social media platform ‘X’ on the occasion of National Voters’ Day on Saturday.

“As we celebrate National Voter’s Day, the continued erosion of the institutional integrity of the Election Commission of India over the past ten years is a matter of grave national concern,” Mr Kharge said in a tweet. “Our Election Commission of India and our parliamentary democracy, despite widespread doubts over decades, proved to be fair, independent and exemplary globally,” he said.

It is to be noted that National Voter’s Day has been celebrated for the last 15 years in view of the establishment of the Election Commission (EC) on January 25, 1950, a day before the formation of the Republic of India. “Protecting the independence of our institutions is essential to preserve our democracy and uphold the constitutional principles on which it rests,” Kharge said.

Similarly, in another post on X, Congress General Secretary In-Charge Sanchar Jairam Ramesh said, “There will be a lot of self-congratulations today but this will not hide the fact that the Election Commission as it is functioning is not a mockery of the Constitution. has been, but also an insult to the voters.”

Ramesh said, “As we celebrate National Voter’s Day, it is instructive for us to remember what the RSS weekly ‘Organizer’ wrote on January 7, 1952, during the first general elections. It hoped that Jawaharlal Nehru would live to ‘acknowledge the failure of universal adult suffrage in India’.” -News-Patiala
