Paris, January 6
Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy is on trial for allegedly taking money from the government of the then ruler of Libya, Muammar Gaddafi, to campaign for the presidential election in 2007. Sarkozy (69) was the President of France between 2007 and 2012. Sarkozy arrived in court today for the hearing, but he did not speak to the media. However, the former president has denied the allegations against him. Sarkozy is involved in many controversies and the case of Libya is the biggest and most shocking. The hearing in this matter will be held till April 10 and the decision is expected to come after that. Sarkozy is accused of corruption, illegal campaigning, concealment of embezzlement of government funds and criminal conspiracy. The former president could face up to ten years in prison if convicted. In this case, a trial is going on against Sarkozy along with three other former ministers and 11 people. -News-Patiala
