Chandigarh, 23 January
Amritpal Singh, Member of Parliament from Khadur Sahib, Punjab, who is currently lodged in Assam’s Dibrugarh Jail under the National Security Act (NSA), has filed a petition in the Punjab and Haryana High Court. He has sought permission to attend the Parliament session on January 26 and participate in the Republic Day celebrations.
In his petition, Amritpal Singh argued that his prolonged absence was preventing his 19 lakh voters from raising their voices in Parliament, and claimed that his detention was politically motivated and intended to curb his growing popularity.
The detention order issued by the Deputy Magistrate of Amritsar in March 2023 has been extended several times.
A fresh detention order was issued in March 2024, citing social media posts and alleged unauthorized objects in the prison. Amritpal Singh has described these reasons as weak and unconstitutional. The MP from Khadur Sahib further argued that his detention not only violates his constitutional rights but also the rights of the voters of his constituency. In his petition, Amritpal Singh has asked the court for interim release and immediate decision on the pending case. –ANI
