The Indian cricket team lost the Boxing Day Test match against Australia in just two hours. The dismissal of Yashaswi Jaiswal in the last session of the fifth day in the match played in Melbourne led to India’s defeat. The controversial decision of the third umpire brought the Indian team close to defeat. Australia’s second innings ended on 234 and India were set a target of 340 for victory. Team India lost 7 wickets in the last session and the entire team was reduced to 155 runs. With this win, Australia has taken a 2-1 lead and has ensured that the team will not lose in this 5-match series. India can level the series by winning the next match.
The thrill of the last day
India ended Australia’s second innings with the wicket of Nathan Lyon as play began on the final day. Team India was given a target of 340 runs to win and the discussion was going on whether we will go for the win or draw the match. In the first session of the game, India lost the wickets of Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. In the second session, Yashaswi Jaiswal and Rishabh Pant batted strongly and made Australia hungry for wickets.
It seemed that these two batsmen would gradually lead India to victory. After the start of the third session, the Australian captain played a trick by bowling Travis Head which was successful. Being tempted, Pant took the shot and lost the wicket. After this, Ravindra Jadeja and then Nitish Kumar Reddy, who scored a century in the previous innings, got out.
The controversial decision overturned the match
Yashaswi Jaiswal was caught behind the wicket by Alex Carey off Pat Cummins. The field umpire rejected the appeal. The Australian captain immediately called for a review where the Bangladesh umpire gave a decision that shocked everyone. Sharfuddaula clearly saw through the snickometer that there was no contact between the ball and the bat. Clearly rejecting the technology, after watching the video footage, believing his eyes to be correct, he declared Yashasvi out. The umpire believed that the ball hit Yashaswi’s glove.
