Childhood Have I ever had head lice? There was such itching that sometimes even the skin of the scalp would come off while scratching the head. This causes accumulation of blood and then pain and irritation.
According to a study published in the famous journal ‘Springer Nature’, pediculosis, an infection caused by head lice, is becoming a global problem. A large population of the world is being affected by this. Researchers are blaming head-to-head contact during selfie for this. Lice removal clinics in North America and Europe also claim that in the last few years the number of people coming to them for lice removal has increased manifold.
Although anyone can have the problem of lice, it is more common in children. Generally, this problem is often seen in children between 3 to 11 years.
This is the season of lice going on. In India, autumn begins with the end of September. This continues till December. This is the most favorable season for the growth of lice.
so today ‘medical certificate‘I will talk about lice. You will also learn that-
- Why are lice often on the heads of children?
- What can be the danger of having head lice?
- If you have lice, what is the treatment?
Lice stick to our scalp
If you do not know about lice, then understand that they are small, crawling insects. They do not have wings. They live in the hair of our head. Lice suck blood from our head, this is their food. They keep expanding their family rapidly. They lay eggs, which are called nits. These stick to our scalp. The infection caused by these is called pediculosis.
Why do small children often have the problem of lice?
Lice can be on anyone’s head. It is often said about them that lice never make any economic-social discrimination. However, it is also true that generally this problem is seen more in children between 3 to 11 years.
Dr. Vijay Singhal, a dermatologist at Sribalaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi, says that the lifestyle of children is such that they get lice in their heads. Children have head-to-head contact while playing. They share their things with each other at school or in games. During this time, lice easily enter each other’s head. Another big reason is that lice are able to easily suck blood from the skin of children. That’s why they grow rapidly on their heads.
How long do lice stay alive in someone’s head?
The average lifespan of a louse is 33 days. However, some lice survive for up to 35 days. How long lice will survive after applying medicated shampoo or lotion depends on how many lice are in your hair. If proper treatment is taken, they completely disappear from the head within 2 to 3 weeks.
If you want to get rid of lice as quickly as possible, follow the instructions given on the shampoo, lotion or cream properly.

How to know if there are lice in hair?
The most common symptom of lice is itching. Especially the hair behind the neck and near the ears are more likely to have lice. That’s why itching is more severe here.
If the child is repeatedly scratching his head at night before sleeping, then it is very likely that he has head lice. If you look closely at the head in daylight, white lines can be seen. These look like dandruff, whereas they are nits i.e. lice eggs. If you want more confirmation, you can try removing some lice with the help of a fine comb.
When it is confirmed that there are lice in the head, you can buy over-the-counter medicated shampoo or lotion and apply it on the hair. This is more important because the scalp of children is soft. If it comes out quickly due to itching, the risk of infection increases.
Another reason is that children’s sleep can be affected due to the itching of lice. This affects their studies and daily work.
How do lice spread to each other’s heads?
Head lice cannot fly, they cannot even jump. They can only crawl. So they usually spread by crawling from one person to another during very close contact. Sometimes they can also spread through towel, bedsheet, comb or hat.
Dr. Vijay Singhal says that there is no truth in the fact that insects like lice found on the body of pets spread into the hair of humans. The truth is that lice of humans and animals are completely different from each other.
There is no truth in the fact that lice flourish due to not maintaining hygiene. Lice spread only from one person to another. It is certainly possible that dirty scalp helps the lice stay hidden.
What can happen if you or your child has head lice?
The most reassuring thing for you is that lice themselves cannot spread any disease. However, these can cause itching in the head. Repeated itching can irritate your scalp, which can lead to infection.
How are lice treated?
Generally, there is no need to go to the doctor in case of lice. For this, medicated shampoo, lotion or cream can be used. Shampoos contain substances called pyrethrins or permethrins, which kill lice and nits. Follow the instructions written in the shampoo carefully.
How to protect against lice?
The best way to prevent lice is to not share combs, brushes, towels or hats with others. If a person has head lice, avoid very close contact with him. After using comb etc. at home, soak it in hot water for 10 minutes.
Tell children about lice and advise them to be careful about it. Such as-
- Tell children to avoid head-to-head contact while playing.
- Do not share your hat or headwear with others.
