Lucknow, January 1
In a grim start to the New Year, UP capital Lucknow police on Wednesday arrested a 24-year-old man, Arshad, for allegedly strangling his mother and four sisters to death at a hotel in the city. These murders, allegedly committed by him with the help of his father, have spread a wave of outrage in the entire region.
Raveena Tyagi, Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Central, giving this information, said, “We received information from Thana Naka area that five dead bodies were found in a room of Hotel Sharanjeet. The accused Arshad has been taken into custody. He has confessed to the crime of killing his mother and four sisters. Some of them were killed by slitting their throats and some by cutting their veins.”
The deceased have been identified as Alia (9), Alshia (19), Aqsa (16), Rahmeen (18) and their mother Asma. The brutal murders came to light when the hotel staff informed the police about the discovery of dead bodies in a room. Arshad, a resident of Islam Nagar, Teddy Bagia, Kuberpur, Agra, allegedly admitted during interrogation that the murders were due to a family dispute involving neighbours.
According to his confession, the family was first taken to Ajmer Sharif and then brought to Lucknow a day before the murder. DCP Tyagi said, “Arshad has alleged that his father helped him commit the crime. However, it will be known only after the investigation how much his father’s hand is in the crime. We have contacted the Agra police for further enquiries.”
The accused said that he first killed his mother and then killed his sisters, while they were sleeping in the hotel room. A video clip shows Arshad describing the crime and revealing that he committed it out of long-standing frustration over family disputes. – IANS
