summer As the temperature increases, the risk of dehydration i.e. lack of water in the body increases. This is common, but do you know that water also controls blood circulation and heartbeat? When there is less fluid in the body, the blood starts thickening. Also, disturbances start occurring in the hormonal system. This can cause blood pressure (BP) to suddenly increase to dangerous levels.

In such a situation, if someone is already suffering from high BP or heart disease, then dehydration can prove to be a ‘silent threat’.

so ‘Physical Health’ Today I will talk about the effect of dehydration on BP. You will also learn that-

  • After all, why do blood vessels start shrinking due to lack of water?
  • Why not feeling thirsty can also be an alarm bell?
  • What mistakes should heart patients avoid in summer?

Question- What is dehydration and when does it happen?

answer- Dehydration is a condition when there is a deficiency of water and electrolytes (such as sodium-potassium) in the body.

This usually happens due to excessive sweating, vomiting, diarrhea, fever or not drinking enough water. Hot weather, heavy physical activity and prolonged exposure to sunlight increase the risk.

Question- What effect does dehydration have on blood pressure?

answer- Due to dehydration, the amount of fluid in the body reduces.

  • This reduces the volume of blood in the body, which in some cases reduces blood pressure.
  • The body activates a hormonal system to compensate for this.
  • Due to this, blood vessels start shrinking and blood pressure increases.
  • This change is especially visible in those people who already have high blood pressure or heart problems.

Question- What happens in the body during dehydration, due to which blood pressure increases?

answer- When dehydration occurs, the body tries to balance the lack of water.

  • Sensing danger, the body activates the kidney and hormonal systems. This process is called ‘renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system’.
  • This system constricts the blood vessels.
  • In this situation the body starts trying to retain sodium and water.
  • Due to this, blood pressure suddenly increases. If someone already has high BP problem then it can be dangerous.

Question- What effect does dehydration have on heart and blood circulation?

answer- Due to dehydration, blood volume starts decreasing.

  • Due to this, the heart has to work harder to supply blood to all the parts of the body.
  • To smooth this process the heart starts pumping faster.

blood circulation

  • Dehydration causes the blood to thicken, which can affect circulation.
  • In severe conditions, there may be a risk of dizziness, weakness and fainting.
  • In people who already have heart disease, there may be additional pressure on the heart.

Question- For which people can dehydration be more dangerous?

answer- Dehydration is dangerous for everyone, but for some people it can cause serious conditions, see the graphic-

Question- If someone has high BP or heart related problem, then what precautions should he take during the summer season?

answer- First of all, keep monitoring blood pressure regularly.

  • Keep taking enough water and fluids throughout the day.
  • Do not stay in strong sunlight and heat for a long time.
  • Take BP and heart medicines regularly as per doctor’s advice.
  • Limit salt and caffeine intake.
  • Eat light and balanced food, so that there is no extra pressure on the body.
  • If you feel dizzy, weak or your heart rate increases, take rest immediately.
  • If you feel the need, definitely consult a doctor.

Question- If someone has suffered a heart stroke, attack or has undergone any heart surgery, then what precautions should he take during the summer season?

answer- Summer season may prove to be more sensitive for these people-

  • Keep drinking water at regular intervals to keep the body hydrated.
  • Avoid going to very hot and humid environments.
  • Limit heavy physical activity or exercise in summer.
  • Follow the medicines and diet plan prescribed by the doctor.
  • Wear light and loose clothes so that body temperature is controlled.
  • If there is sudden fatigue, shortness of breath or chest pain, seek medical help immediately.

Question- Why does the risk of dehydration increase in the summer season?

answer- In summer, we sweat more to control body temperature.

  • Water and electrolytes also exit the body with sweat.
  • If water is not drunk in sufficient quantity then it becomes deficient in the body.
  • Strong sunlight and high temperature cause more water loss from the body.
  • People working outside and sportsmen are at higher risk.
  • Therefore, keeping the body hydrated in summer is very important for health.

Question- What are the early signs of dehydration, which should not be ignored?

answer- The condition can become more serious if these signs are ignored-

Question- Which people are more at risk of dehydration?

answer- The risk of dehydration is not the same for every person. This danger becomes serious under certain physical conditions and age-

  • Infants and children- Children have low body weight and fast metabolism, due to which the turnover of water and electrolytes occurs very quickly. They are not even able to express their thirst properly.
  • elderly- With increasing age, the brain’s ability to give ‘thirst signals’ decreases. Also, water retention in the body of the elderly is less.
  • Chronic disease patients: People with uncontrolled diabetes and kidney disease are at higher risk.
  • Those who are on medication- People who take diuretic medicines for high BP, their body expels fluid rapidly.

Question- If symptoms of dehydration appear, what should be done immediately?

answer- Preventing the condition from worsening when symptoms appear should be a priority. Take these steps-

  • Move the person to a cool or shady place immediately. Lie down with your legs slightly elevated so that blood flow to the brain improves.
  • Instead of drinking a lot of water at once, drink ORS or salt-sugar solution in small sips.
  • If the body temperature is increasing then place cold wet bandages on the head and neck.
  • If the person is unconscious or unable to drink anything, take him to the hospital immediately, as he may need a drip (IV fluids). Take special care of the things given in the graphic-

Question- How much water should one drink in a day to avoid dehydration?

answer- The exact amount of water depends on the person’s weight, physical activity and the environment of the place, but the scientific standards are as follows-

  • A healthy adult male requires approximately 3.7 liters of total fluid (including food water) per day and a female requires 2.7 litres. This means it is okay to drink 8-10 glasses of water throughout the day.
  • This quantity should be increased to 1-2 liters in summer or during physical activity (gym/ outdoor work), as there is huge loss due to sweat.
  • The most scientific way to check hydration condition is the color of urine. If it is ‘dark yellow’, it means you are drinking less water. It should be ‘clear as water’ or light yellow in colour.

Question- Apart from water, which drinks and foods help in keeping the body hydrated?

answer- Plain water is not the only source of hydration, drinks rich in electrolytes and fresh fruits are more effective-

Fluid: Coconut water (the best source of potassium), buttermilk, lemonade and unsweetened fresh fruit juices are excellent hydrating agents.

Hydrating Fruits: Eat watermelon (92% water), cantaloupe, orange, grapes and strawberries. They also provide vitamins and minerals.

Vegetables: Vegetables like cucumber, tomato and bottle gourd not only fulfill the water deficiency but also keep the body cool from inside.

Avoid drinking tea and coffee, as they are ‘dehydrating’ and remove water from the body.
