One The phrase is ‘under the weather’ meaning feeling a little unwell. If you too get cough, sneeze and fever due to slight change in the weather, then you are not alone.
Actually, when the weather changes, there is a sudden change in temperature, humidity and air pressure (barometric pressure). Due to this, the body’s immune system becomes weak and the risk of virus or bacterial infection increases. Due to this, problems related to cold, viral fever, allergies and digestion also increase.

- Why do people fall ill when the weather changes?
- Which people are at greater risk?
- How to take care of your health during this time?
Expert: Dr. Arvind Aggarwal, Director, Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases, Shri Balaji Action Medical Institute, Delhi
Question- Why do people fall ill when the weather changes?
answer- Sudden change in weather puts additional pressure on the body. The body also has to adjust itself to the changes equally fast. This temporarily weakens the immune system and increases the risk of infection. When the weather changes, allergens like pollen and dust also increase, which can cause cold, sinus and respiratory problems. The risk of dehydration and fatigue also increases in summer.
Question- How does changing weather affect our body?
answer- Change in weather affects the physiological systems of the body (internal body systems, which together keep the body healthy). When temperatures drop or rise, the body has to adjust blood circulation and metabolism, which can cause headaches, low energy or fluctuations in blood pressure for some people. In cold weather, blood vessels shrink, which can increase pressure on the heart, while in extreme heat, the body regulates temperature through sweating, which increases the risk of electrolyte imbalance.
Question- What effect does changing weather have on our sleep and mood?
answer- The body’s circadian rhythm (biological clock) is controlled by light and temperature. When the days get shorter or longer, this can cause the balance of melatonin (sleep hormone) and serotonin (mood hormone) to change.

Question- Which people are at greater risk of falling ill when the weather changes?
answer- Some people adjust easily as the weather changes, but for some, this change becomes the cause of cold, allergy or other diseases. Those people have more problems-
- Whose immunity is weak.
- Those who are already facing some disease.
Apart from this, which people have problems, see the complete list in the graphic-

Question- Is falling sick again and again a sign of weak immune system?
answer- Having a cold 2–3 times a year is considered normal, especially in children. but if-
- infections recur
- The infection may not heal for a long time
- require frequent antibiotics
- every small disease turns serious
So this could be a sign of decreased immune function.
Question: Due to weak immunity, children fall more ill when the weather changes. In such a situation, what should be done to keep them healthy?
answer- As the weather changes, the risk of cold, cough and fever increases in children. In such a situation, by adopting some basic but necessary steps, they can be protected from infection to a great extent. Let us understand from the graphic how children can be protected from diseases in the changing weather-
