But now the picture has changed. High blood pressure is no longer a disease affecting only the elderly. The problem of high blood pressure is becoming common among the youth of 20-30 years of age in the country and the world. According to a study published by the American Heart Association in 2016, 10 to 15% of youth aged 20 to 29 across the world are victims of high blood pressure.

A study by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Imperial College London says that between 1990 and 2019, cases of high blood pressure doubled. While in 1990, approximately 648 million people across the world were suffering from high BP, in the year 2019 this number increased to 1.28 billion.

Approximately 1.4 billion people aged 30–79 years worldwide were affected by hypertension (high blood pressure) in 2024. That means almost three out of every ten adults are suffering from high blood pressure.

The worrying thing is that more than half of the people do not know that their BP is increased.

If this pressure remains high for a long time, it can cause damage to the heart, brain, kidneys and eyes. This increases the risk of serious problems like heart attack and stroke. It is also called hypertension.

answer- Blood pressure increases when blood vessels become narrow or fluid retention increases in the body. Many factors can be responsible behind this-

  • growing old
  • Genetic Nature (Genetic Causes)
  • obesity
  • insulin resistance
  • high salt food
  • smoking and alcohol
  • Hormonal or kidney related diseases
  • Some medicines (steroids, painkillers, hormonal medicines)

answer- Hypertension at a young age is mainly associated with unhealthy lifestyle. Long working hours, excessive consumption of fast food, lack of sleep, mental stress and sedentary lifestyle increase pressure on blood vessels. Due to chronic stress, hormones like cortisol and adrenaline increase in the body, which can keep blood pressure high.

answer- For this, change in lifestyle is very important. Understand by pointers-

  • Exercise at least 30 minutes daily.
  • Eat less than 5 grams of salt daily so that sodium levels in the body do not increase.
  • Adopt a balanced and healthy diet.
  • If the weight is high then try to reduce it by 5-10%.
  • Don’t drink alcohol and don’t smoke.
  • Reduce stress.
  • To reduce stress, do meditation or take deep breaths.
  • Also monitor BP regularly at home, so that changes can be monitored and appropriate steps can be taken if needed.

answer- In high blood pressure, the diet should focus on reducing salt and increasing such nutrients, which help in keeping blood pressure balanced.

DASH (Dietary Approach to Stop Hypertension) diet is considered effective in high BP. This includes green leafy vegetables, seasonal fruits, whole grains, pulses, beans, nuts and low-fat dairy. Saturated fat, red meat and processed foods should be kept less. Additionally, a diet rich in potassium, magnesium and fiber helps keep blood pressure balanced.

Question- What things should not be eaten if you have high blood pressure?

answer- Excessive salt and ultraprocessed foods are the most risky for high blood pressure. Apart from these-

  • Foods like pickles, papad, namkeen, chips, instant noodles, canned soups and processed meat should be avoided.
  • Also avoid fast food, bakery items and fried snacks high in trans fat and saturated fat.
  • Sugary drinks, soda and alcohol can cause unstable blood pressure.
