Why was this decision taken?

Every year, a large number of soldiers retire at a young age. They bring work experience, discipline, leadership skills and a sense of patriotism. Therefore, the government wants their experience to be useful in other government departments across the country. The agreement between the Indian Army and the Indian Railways aims to ease the transition from military to civilian employment. It will help the soldiers to start a new career.

How much reservation for which post?

Railways has clarified that different percentage of reservation will be provided for different posts:

Level-1 posts (ie Group D category posts)

– 20% reservation for ex-servicemen

– 10% reservation for ex-fire warriors

Level-2 and above posts

– 10% reservation for ex-fire warriors

– 5% reservation for ex-fire warriors

A total of 14,788 posts have been reserved for ex-servicemen in the 2024 and 2025 recruitments, the Railways said. Thousands of these posts are in Level-1 and Level-2 categories.

Temporary recruitment for the post of Pointsman

Until the regular recruitment process is completed, the Railways has decided to hire ex-servicemen on contractual basis for posts like ‘Pointsman’. More than 5,000 Level-1 posts are being filled in various divisions. Several railway divisions have also signed MoUs with army-related organizations to speed up the recruitment process.

The government has already provided reservation for ex-firemen in the central police force. Additionally, 20% reservation has been announced for constable recruitment in Delhi Police. They will also get relaxation in physical examination and relaxation in upper age limit by three years.

What is Agnipath Yojana?

The Ministry of Defense launched the Agnipath Yojana in June 2022. Under this scheme, youth are recruited into the Army, Navy and Air Force for a period of four years. After four years, some youths get permanent employment, while others are offered employment opportunities in other government and private sectors. This year, the first batch of Agniveers is completing its service. So, this new initiative by Railways is being considered very important for them.
