Question- How true and serious is the claim of finding coliform bacteria in packaged milk?
answer- The claim of finding coliform bacteria in packaged milk cannot be ignored. Dairy products have been tested by ‘Trustified’, an independent organization that conducts 100% blind testing. 100% blind testing means conducting an unbiased test without revealing the identity of the brand.
There are continuous deficiencies in the quality of milk. Last month, action was also taken against illegal units producing adulterated milk in Gujarat, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh. In a raid in Gujarat, it was revealed that water, milk powder, caustic soda, oil, detergent and urea were being mixed in milk. Therefore, the claim of finding coliform bacteria in milk is very serious.

Question- How justified are the questions raised on some reputed milk brands of India?
answer- Before selling packaged milk in India, it is mandatory to follow the strict quality standards of FSSAI (Food Safety and Standards Authority of India). Big brands usually go through multiple levels of quality checks.
However, the possibility of adulteration in any food product cannot be completely ruled out. Therefore, after a complaint or report comes forward, independent testing regarding the quality of food items is necessary.
In such a situation, there is a need to strictly investigate the questions raised on some reputed dairy companies of India. After continuous questions being raised on dairy products, FSSAI has intensified investigation and sampling.
Question- What is coliform bacteria and how does it reach milk?
answer- Coliform bacteria are commonly found in human and animal feces, soil, water, and dirt. This can cause problems like diarrhea, vomiting and food poisoning. Also, it may indicate the presence of harmful bacteria like E. coli in milk.
E. coli bacteria can cause serious infections. These bacteria come due to lack of hygiene during milking, processing or storage of animals.
Question- Does finding coliform bacteria in milk mean that its quality is bad?
answer- Coliform bacteria in milk exceeding the standard means that its hygiene has not been taken care of. Milk has been exposed to some level of dirt, contaminated water or poor handling. The quantity of bacteria in milk which is scientifically packaged and considered safe, many times more than the standard, shows carelessness. This can cause milk to spoil quickly and increase the risk of food infection.
Question- How can coliform bacteria harm health?
answer- The presence of coliform bacteria in milk above the standard means that it is contaminated. Due to this, there can be a risk of stomach infection, diarrhea, vomiting, stomach pain and food poisoning. It can have serious effects in children, elderly and people with weak immunity. Therefore it is important to avoid contaminated milk. What problems can be caused by this, see in the graphic-

Question- Which people are at greater health risk from coliform bacteria?
answer- Due to this, people with weak immunity face the most problems. All these are at risk-
Young children: Their immunity is not fully developed.
elderly people: Their immunity is weak.
Pregnant women: Infection can affect both mother and baby.
People with weak immunity: They have higher risk of diseases.
Diabetic people: They are at higher risk of infection.
People suffering from serious illnesses: They are at higher risk of infection.
People suffering from malnutrition: Their body is not able to fight infection.
Whose digestive system is bad: They are at higher risk of stomach problems.
Question: Does boiling milk destroy coliform bacteria?
answer- Bacteria cannot tolerate high temperatures. Boiling significantly reduces the risk of infection. However, if the milk comes in contact with contaminated utensils or dirty hands after boiling, the bacteria can grow again. Therefore, along with boiling, cleanliness is also important.
Question- What things must be checked on the packet while buying milk?
answer- Some precautions need to be taken even while buying packaged milk. Look at the graphic-

Question- Which is safer between open and packaged milk and why?
answer- Packaged milk is considered safer in many ways, as it has to follow the safety and quality standards set by FSSAI during processing and packing. In this, a process like pasteurization (a process in which milk is heated at high temperature for a certain time to kill harmful bacteria and then immediately cooled) is adopted, due to which the harmful bacteria are greatly reduced.
Whereas in loose milk, it is difficult to track how much cleanliness has been maintained during milk extraction, storage and transportation. This may increase the risk of infection. However, whether milk is packaged or loose, it is important to boil both milk thoroughly in a clean vessel before including it in the diet, so that potential bacteria are destroyed.
Question- What symptoms can be seen if contaminated milk is consumed?
answer- Drinking contaminated milk can cause many health risks. As-
- Frequent diarrhea.
- Nausea and vomiting.
- Stomach pain or cramps.
- Feeling feverish or weak.
- Gas, flatulence or indigestion problems.
- Dehydration in severe cases.
Question- What to do immediately if the above symptoms appear after drinking contaminated milk?
answer- If you see the above symptoms then do these things immediately-
- Drink enough clean water to avoid dehydration.
- Take ORS or electrolyte solution, so that dehydration does not occur.
- Eat light and easily digestible food for some time.
- In case of vomiting or diarrhea, take rest and do not do heavy work.
- Stop milk and dairy products for some time.
- Do not take antibiotics or medicines without doctor’s advice.
- Monitor body temperature in case of fever or weakness.
- Take special care of children, elderly and pregnant women.
- If symptoms persist for more than 24 hours, consult a doctor.
- If you have high fever, bloody diarrhea or excessive weakness, go to the hospital immediately.
Question- What is the right way to safely include milk in the daily diet?
answer- For this, always buy milk from a reliable source and follow the correct method of packing, expiry date and storage. Boil milk thoroughly in a clean vessel before consuming it, because heating destroys most of the harmful bacteria.
After boiling the milk, keep it covered and do not leave it at room temperature for a long time. If needed, store in the refrigerator at around 4°C. Use clean utensils and spoons to express and store milk, so that re-infection does not occur. If signs like bad smell, bad taste are seen then do not consume milk.
