cyber Criminals are adopting new methods of fraud every day. Now they are targeting college students who are looking for internships. Cyber thugs are cheating the youth by showing attractive offers like good salary and guaranteed placement in the name of internship.
In view of this danger, recently the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Center (I4C) has issued an alert. I4C, through its social media platforms, has warned students and parents to be cautious of this new scam.

Question- What is internship scam?
answer- In internship scam, cyber criminals trap students by luring them with fake internships. They obtain personal information by luring them with easy work, certificates, stipends and placements. Later they misuse the personal details of the students.
Question- How are swindlers carrying out scams in the name of internship?
answer- In internship scams, fraudsters take advantage of students’ desire to quickly get an internship and career pressure. They ask for money and personal details from students by showing fake offers. At first everything seems professional and genuine. But in reality there is neither any real company nor any work. Real companies never ask for money for a job or internship.
Question- How to identify fake job offers received from any place other than LinkedIn?
answer- There are some easy signs of this. Such as –
- If the offer is received very quickly and without an interview.
- Money is being demanded in exchange for job or internship.
- Very high salary or stipend is being offered.
- No clear information related to the company’s website or office is available.
- Personal or bank details are being sought immediately.
- Pressure is being created to take a quick decision.
- Contact should be made through personal mail or number instead of official e-mail.
Question- How to identify fake offer letter?
answer- There are some basic shortcomings in fake offer letters, which are very important to pay attention to. Such as-
- It often does not contain the complete address and correct logo of the company.
- There is no official e-mail ID.
- Information about role, salary, work profile and joining process is not clear.
- There is a lack of professional language and correct format.
- Pressure is created to join quickly.
- There is talk of collecting fees under some pretext or the other.
- Whereas the actual offer letter is always in professional language. It contains complete information about the company, job details and official contacts, which can be easily verified.
Question- Does any authentic company ask for money for job training?
answer- No, no authentic and professional company asks for money in return for providing job or internship or for training. If any offer talks about training, registration or processing fees, then it is a clear indication that it is fake.
Question- Where and how to complain about internship scam?
answer- For this, go to the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal cybercrime.gov.in and lodge a complaint online or call the cyber helpline number 1930. To make a complaint, keep evidence of all mail/message conversations with you. You can also lodge a complaint in your nearest police station.
