A few weeks ago, researchers from Germany’s Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) published a study. It was revealed that people can be identified in real-time through Wi-Fi routers, even if they do not have any connected device. Professor Thorsten Strufe, who conducted the study, said that when people pass through radio waves, there is a change in them and through this, images of people can be created. While clear photos are visible in CCTV, people can be detected using radio waves with the help of a router.
How do you find people’s addresses?
Modern Wi-Fi routers have beamforming feedback information (BFI) to improve signal efficiency. The KIT team found that using this data the presence and movement of people can be detected. In view of this, Professor Struf has described it as a camera running on radio waves instead of light waves.
Why is it dangerous?
A researcher from the research team said that by taking advantage of this, Wi-Fi routers can be used for surveillance. Giving an example, he said that if a person passes by a cafe with Wi-Fi network every day, then his presence and movement can be recorded without his knowledge, which can be used by governments and companies. Nowadays, Wi-Fi routers are present everywhere, making it a huge surveillance infrastructure. Because of this, there is a big threat to people’s privacy.
