Weather Alert- A blizzard warning has been issued for the US East Coast. According to U.S. media reports and the National Weather Service, a powerful storm is expected to bring heavy snowfall, strong winds and coastal flooding to the Mid-Atlantic and northeastern United States. This has led to blizzard warnings in major cities including New York and Boston, resulting in more than 1,500 flight cancellations.
The National Weather Service’s Weather Prediction Center said a low pressure forming in the Southeast will move toward the southern Mid-Atlantic coast by Sunday morning and deepen rapidly by evening, moving northeast along the East Coast. In its forecast, the Center has warned of a major storm for the Northeast and heavy snowfall for the North Mid-Atlantic and Northeast.
The forecast calls for snowfall at a rate of more than an inch per hour at times, making travel nearly impossible. It also said the system will rapidly intensify into a low pressure system off the Mid-Atlantic coast, causing widespread severe impacts across the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast from Sunday into Monday.
Blizzard conditions are forecast for coastal areas from Delaware to southeastern New England. Weather experts have warned that travel in these areas will become very dangerous due to low visibility, and winds of 64 to 113 km/h are expected from coastal New Jersey to southeastern New England. The Meteorological Center said that the combination of heavy snow and strong winds is likely to cause power outages at some to many places.
Coastal areas from Delaware to Cape Cod were also warned of moderate flooding and inundation of roads and property near the coast. Snowfall rates of one to two inches per hour or more Sunday night could make travel dangerous, even impossible, the weather service warned. Hurricanes occur along the Atlantic coast in February in the United States, when cold continental air meets relatively warm Atlantic waters.
