Haryana Class 1 Admission Rule: The Haryana government has taken an important decision regarding school education, which will have a direct impact on the children and their parents taking admission in the first class. In order to bring the education system in line with the national norms, the state government has issued new orders regarding the age of entry in the first class. As per the new rules, starting from the 2026-27 academic year, a child must be at least 6 years old to get admission in the first class.
Children of 5.5 years of age will no longer be admitted in the first class.
According to the Education Department notification, children who have not attained the age of 6 years will not be admitted to the first class. This means that the age at which many children previously gained school entry has been closed. The decision was taken on the basis of the National Education Policy (NEP 2020) and the directives of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
First, why was the first class admission rule changed?
Earlier, under the Haryana Education Rules 2011, children could be admitted to Class I at the age of 5 years and 6 months. However, the central government had long been directing all states to implement a minimum age of 6 years.
Education experts say that by the age of 6, children are better able to handle the mental and physical pressures of studying. In addition, the 5+3+3+4 education model of NEP 2020 also states that the first three years should be pre-school, followed by Grades 1 and 2.
The High Court order also provided clear guidance
The Punjab and Haryana High Court in the case of ‘Divisha Yadav v. State of Haryana’ made it clear that the education regulations of the state should be in accordance with the laws of the central government. Following the court’s direction, the government has clarified the age limit to avoid future admission disputes.
What will change for parents?
This decision will affect parents who wanted to send their children to school early. The government has made it clear that children who do not reach the required age will have to go to kindergarten or pre-school. Studying with children of the same age will reduce unnecessary academic pressure on children. It has also been clarified that there will be no age relaxation from 2026-27.
Strict instructions have been given to schools and education department
Haryana Directorate of School Education has directed all District Education Officers and private schools to strictly implement this rule. Schools have been asked to clearly mention the new age limit on their admission notices and notice boards, so that parents get timely and accurate information.
