8 runs in one ball: In cricket, how many runs can be scored on one ball? You can say six. But when eight runs are scored in one ball, you will be surprised. That too when neither a no-ball nor a wide ball is bowled. However, there have been many occasions in cricket history where a batsman has scored eight runs off one ball. This unique cricket record also includes a legendary Indian batsman.

But there have been times in Test cricket history when a batsman has scored eight runs off a ball, not six. And that too without a single no-ball or wide. The list also includes legendary Indian batsman Vijay Hazare, who scored eight runs off a ball in the Test series against England.
England’s Patsy Hendren holds the record for scoring eight runs off one ball for the first time in Test cricket history. Hendren achieved this feat in the Melbourne Test against Australia in 1928–29. In the first innings, Hendren hit a brilliant shot to Australian fast bowler Percy Hornibrook. The ball didn’t cross the boundary, but by the time it was fielded, Hendren ran in and completed four runs. The fielder failed to stop the ball near the boundary, and it went across the boundary for a boundary. Thus, the batsman scored four runs from the run and four runs from the overthrow.
Eight runs were scored on one ball in Test cricket
Great Indian batsman Vijay Hazare scored eight runs off a single ball against England in Mumbai in 1951-52. At that time, the captain of the Indian Test team, Vijay Hazare, shot on the off side at the ball of England fast bowler Brian Santhan. The ball was caught by fielder Fred Riggway near the boundary. By the time the fielder bowled, Vijay Hazare had run in and completed four runs with partner Pankaj Roy. In an attempt to dismiss Pankaj Roy, Rigway overturned the ball. The ball went across the boundary, giving Vijay Hazare eight runs. Runs from the overthrow are also added to the batsman’s account.
Australia’s dashing all-rounder Andrew Symonds pulled a delivery from paceman O’Brien in a Test match against New Zealand in 2008–09, taking advantage of a lazy throw from the fielder to run for three runs. Wicketkeeper Brendon McCullum had to run very far to catch the overthrow. McCullum tries to collect the ball and hits it on the wicket, but misses the mark, and the ball goes over the boundary for a boundary. Symonds thus added four runs.
