He is the first Muslim mayor of New York. Mamdani’s victory is a major blow to Donald Trump, who has been consistently opposed to him. He threatened to withhold funding from New York if Mamdani won.

Who is Zohran Mamdani?

Zohran Mamdani, 34, was born in Uganda and raised in New York City. He is a member of the New York State Assembly and identifies as a Democratic Socialist. Zohran is the son of renowned Indian filmmaker Meera Nair and Ugandan Indian-origin writer Mahmood Mamdani. His victory is being considered as a proud moment for Indian immigrants in America.

What promises did Mamdani make?

After winning the election, Zohran Mamdani said he would bring significant changes to New York as mayor. He announced that he would immediately freeze rents for all rent-stabilized tenants and use every possible resource to create affordable housing to reduce the rent burden on the common people. He promised fast and free bus service, saying bus fares would be completely abolished across the city. He also announced the creation of primary lanes and loading zones for buses to solve problems caused by double parking on roads.
