ChatGPT maker OpenAI has said that personal data of some of its API product users has been leaked. This data has been leaked due to a glitch in the company’s third-party data analytics provider Mixpanel. This month, an attacker broke into Mixpanel’s system and exported the data. The company said that OpenAI’s systems and ChatGPT users have not been affected in this data leak. Users using the company’s API products have been affected by this leak.
What data was leaked?
OpenAI said that in this data leak, profile-level details of API accounts have been leaked. This detail includes account name, email address associated with it, location related to city, state and country etc., operating system and browser information, referring websites and organizations and user ID etc. The company claims that sensitive and authentication related information about users has not been leaked.
What action is the company taking now?
OpenAI said that it became aware of this data leak on November 25, after which, taking action, it has completely removed Mixpanel from its production system and is auditing its vendor ecosystem. It will also further tighten the security arrangements required for all its third-party partners, so that such incidents can be prevented in future. Along with this, the company has started giving information about this to all the companies, admins and users affected by the data leak.
This warning for affected users
OpenAI has warned the affected users that the leaked data can be used for phishing and other cyber attacks. The company has asked all users to take special care regarding emails coming from OpenAI. Users need to be alert from such emails which contain any suspicious link or ask for personal information. OpenAI said that it never asks for password, API key and verification code from its users.
