In fact, at least 64 people were killed in the largest police operation against organized crime in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Tuesday. Security officials said four Brazilian police officers were among the dead, according to a CNN report. The operation was concentrated in the northern areas of the city, particularly the Alemao and Penha complex favela areas, which are dominated by the criminal organization known as Commando Vermelho (Red Command). Rio de Janeiro Governor Claudio Castro said at a press conference that police seized a large amount of drugs during the operation.

Officials claimed on social media that at least 42 rifles have also been recovered. In a post on X on Tuesday afternoon, Castro described the operation as the largest in Rio de Janeiro’s history. The state government said in a lengthy thread on X that the operation had been in the making for more than a year to counter the territorial expansion of Commando Vermelho, which involved more than 2,500 military and civilian police officers. Commando Vermelho is Brazil’s oldest active criminal organization, inspired by the Red Command, an organization of leftist prisoners imprisoned during the military dictatorship that lasted until 1985.

According to the Insight crime think tank, the organization has now become a vast international criminal network involved in drug trafficking and extortion. In recent years, it has grappled with increasing violence from state operations and other criminal militias. The situation was very tense during the operation. Video released by Reuters showed huge plumes of black smoke rising from the Alemao favela. Later photos showed smoke billowing from charred vehicles that the gangs had used as barricades.

The Rio de Janeiro Police Department posted on social media that at least 81 people were arrested on Tuesday. Officials claim the gangs used drones to exact revenge. The state government shared a video on X, which said the criminals retaliated by attacking police officers at the Penha compound with a drone.
