Furniture market shopkeepers in sector 53-54 here have been ordered to vacate the premises. The UT administration has refused to allot alternative space to the shopkeepers of the furniture market. Along with this refusal, the administration can issue instructions to the shopkeepers of the furniture market to vacate the premises at any time. According to the UT administration officials, the shopkeepers in the furniture market have been operating for the past two decades.
These shopkeepers are doing business illegally on government land. The Land Home Department of the UT administration had earlier issued a notice to the shopkeepers of the furniture market on June 22, 2024, directing them to demolish the shops and vacate the government land within a week.
In the notice sent to the shopkeepers, the department clarified that this land was acquired by the Chandigarh administration in 2002. Despite attempts by the shopkeepers to get a stay order from the High Court, all the petitions were disposed of. The UT administration has already given compensation to the original owners of the land. According to the notice, the shopkeepers were directed to demolish the illegal structures and restore the land to its original condition by June 28 last year. In response to these notices, a delegation of the Furniture Market Association met the then Deputy Commissioner (DC) Vinay Pratap Singh on June 25. The DC had directed them to file their individual reply to the LAO before June 28.
Among them, 116 people had filed their responses, while some shopkeepers had not filed their responses.
Due to this, the administration demolished 29 shops from the furniture market of Sector 53 and 54 on June 30.

In 2002, 227.22 acres of land was acquired

The UT administration had acquired a total of 227 acres of land from villages Kajheri, Badheri and Pulsora in the year 2002. It includes 114 acres of Kajheri, 69 acres of Badheri and 43 acres of Pulsora. The third phase of sector-53, 54 and 55 was to be developed with this land.
