Bollywood actor Varun Dhawan had told in an interview a few days ago that his daughter Lara was diagnosed with DDH at the age of one and a half years. DDH means ‘Developmental Dysplasia of Hip.’ This condition is caused by the hip joint not being fully developed.
Varun told that early diagnosis helped in his daughter’s recovery. The sooner this condition is detected, the easier the treatment. Awareness is necessary for this.
so ‘Physical Health’ Today I will talk about DDH condition. You will also learn that-
- What are its initial symptoms?
- Which children have higher risk of DDH?
- What are the measures to prevent this?
Question- Varun Dhawan’s daughter suffered from the disease DDH. What is it?
answer- See its details in the pointers below –
- DDH is a congenital condition.
- This is formed when the hip joint does not develop properly.
- Because of this, the ball of the thigh bone does not fit properly in the hip socket.
- Due to this the hip joint may become loose, unstable or dislocated.
Question- How common is DDH? Why does this happen only to children?
answer- According to the ‘National Library of Medicine’, this condition occurs in 2-3 children out of every 1000 in India. This is a common disease, but it is often detected late.
This is a condition related to prenatal development. That’s why it happens to children.

Question- How is DDH diagnosed?
answer- Doctors mainly do two tests for this, which reveal the looseness or dislocation of the hip joint –
- Ortolani- In this, the doctor presses the child’s hip and checks whether it is unstable.
- Barlow- In this, the child’s hip is pressed inwards to see whether the joint is slipping from its place.
If the doctor sees symptoms of DDH, he also conducts imaging tests. In case of infants, ultrasound is done because their bones are not fully developed. X-ray of the child can also be done after 6 months.
Question- What are the initial symptoms of DDH in small children?
answer- One leg may appear shorter than the other due to the hip joint not developing properly. The skin folds of the thighs or hips are uneven. The child has difficulty in spreading his legs. Lameness may appear while walking. See all the symptoms in graphic-

Question- Is DDH present from birth or can it develop later also?
answer- Understand it with pointers-
- May be present at birth, but is not always the case.
- In some cases the hip joint may gradually develop abnormally after birth.
- Therefore it is called a developmental condition, i.e. a condition that changes with physical development.
- Therefore, screening is very important in the initial months.
- With timely diagnosis, treatment is simple and successful.
Question- What can happen if DDH is not treated on time?
answer- If DDH is not treated on time –
- The hip joint may be permanently dislocated.
- There may be limping while walking. The person may become permanently lame.
- Balance may deteriorate while standing and walking.
- Pain and stiffness in the hip may increase.

Question- Which children are at higher risk of DDH?
answer- Some babies are at higher risk of DDH, especially those born in the breech position. See the details in the graphic below-

Question- What is the treatment of DDH? Can it be completely cured?
answer- For this, doctors give the following treatments-
- In the initial stage, the hip is kept in the correct position with a Pavlik harness (a special type of belt/support).
- After 6 months, a brace or casting (support device to keep the hips in the correct position) may be required.
- Surgery is done in severe cases.
- With early treatment, there is a possibility of complete recovery.
- Treatment may be a bit difficult if diagnosed late.
Question- Why is early treatment of DDH so important?
answer- In the initial months, the hip can be easily brought into the correct position, because at this age the bones are in the developing stage. On receiving timely treatment-
- There is no need for surgery.
- The child’s development remains normal. He can move around comfortably.
- Complications like pain and lameness can be prevented.
- The risk of joint damage in future is reduced.
- If there is delay, the joint becomes hard and unstable and then treatment becomes difficult.
Question- Can this problem occur in older children or adults also?
answer- Yes, the problem of DDH can be seen in older children or adults also.
- It usually remains undiagnosed and emerges later in childhood.
- Due to this, osteoarthritis (joint disease) can occur at an early age.

Question- What things should parents keep in mind, so that children can be protected from DDH?
answer- Avoid tying the baby’s legs tightly i.e. do safe swaddling.
- Get ‘New Born Checkup’ done regularly.
- Pay attention to the movement of the child’s legs.
- Consult a doctor immediately in case of any abnormality.
- Keep hip-friendly positions (in M-shape) in baby carriers.
- If there is a family history, get extra screening done.
- Awareness and timely screening are most important.
