Overthinking is a problem that can make a person hollow from within. Due to this, people get worried about the future or burn with the regrets of the past. Joseph Nuyen’s book is a modern manual to break this mental trap.

This book does not provide any magical formula to get rid of difficulties, but tells us that we are already in a state of peace and happiness. Just the habit of overthinking has taken it away from us. If you are looking for peace, love, satisfaction or happiness, this book is for you.

What does the book say?

This book is based on a very simple, but revolutionary idea. It states that thinking and having thoughts are two different things. The author argues that it is natural for thoughts to come to our mind, but when we start ‘thinking’ about those thoughts, then we feel happiness and sadness.

According to Nuyen, the cause of our suffering is not the circumstances of our lives, but our constant analysis and overthinking about those circumstances.

What does this book teach?

In this era of social media, race and stress, this book teaches the power of ‘non-thinking’. This is for those who are troubled by anxiety, self-doubt and overthinking. The book teaches that the real answer lies not in facts but in feelings.

The author has shared his own stories, pain and the understanding gained from it in the book. Some important aspects of the book are as follows –

There is a difference between thought and thinking

Thoughts come automatically, it is difficult to stop them. But thinking means stopping, judging and analyzing those thoughts.

The book says that thoughts are creations in themselves, but thinking about them for too long leads to destruction.

Running away from truth is the cause of sadness

Most people do not live in reality, they live in their imaginary world (world of thoughts). For example, an incident happens to many people, but everyone has different experiences about it. This means that in reality events are neutral, but our thinking about them makes them good or bad. If you want to stop suffering, stop overthinking.

Life is made up of three principles

Life experience is made up of three principles-

  1. ‘Universal Mind’ i.e. intelligence of nature
  2. ‘Consciousness’ means what we feel and understand life.
  3. Thoughts shape our experiences and emotions.

If we stop thinking and connect directly with the intelligence (divine power) of nature, nature itself starts guiding us.

How to adopt non-thinking

Thinking cannot be stopped completely, but it can be reduced. Let the thoughts come, don’t dwell on them. Awareness is the biggest weapon. Instead of getting too entangled in thoughts and situations, let them go.

5-Step Plan to Deal with Negativity

The author offers a practical way to deal with negative emotions, which he calls ‘PAUSE’. Whenever you feel bad. Try this-

  • P-Ponder (Ponder): Stop and notice what you are feeling.
  • A-Acknowledge: Accept that this is just a ‘thinking’, not a reality.
  • U-Understand: Understand that your emotions are a mirror of your thinking.
  • S-Settle: Sit quietly for some time, do not fight with your thoughts.
  • E-Enlighten (Get Education): Learn from your thoughts and come back to the present.

Who should read this book?

A must read for every person who wants peace in life. See in graphic who should read this book-

My opinion about the book

‘Don’t Believe Your Every Thought’ is not a magical book that will change your life overnight, but it does give you a new ‘glasses’ through which you see the world.

Nuyen has written that work can be done even without thinking. It may seem a bit strange in the beginning, but as you delve deeper, you start understanding its significance.

One small drawback of the book can be said that some things have been repeated in it again and again. However, perhaps the author’s aim is to impress upon the reader’s subconscious mind that thoughts are illusions.
