Question- What is EAT Lancet diet?

answer- The EAT Forum and The Lancet Commission have jointly developed the EAT–Lancet Diet. This is a kind of flexitarian diet. That means most of the food in it is plant-based, like pulses, grains, fruits, vegetables and nuts. The quantity of animal products is kept very low. It is also called ‘Planetary Health Diet’.

Question: When and how did EAT Lancet diet start?

answer- It started on 17 January 2019 in Oslo, Norway. It was prepared jointly by 37 scientists and health experts from 16 countries. The aim of these experts was not just to make a diet chart, but to suggest such a food model, which can be friendly to our health as well as nature. Before this, there was no global consensus diet that balanced both health and environment. Global Consensus means-

  • Which is nutritious for the body.
  • Do not harm the environment.
  • Be sustainable i.e. sustainable for future generations.

Question- What does the new study on EAT Lancet diet say?

answer- According to a new study, following a plant-based, balanced and low-meat diet reduces the risk of chronic kidney disease to a great extent. This diet focuses on plant based food.

This includes vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses, nuts and healthy oils. This study has been published in ‘Canadian Medical Association Journal’.

Question- According to this study, EAT Lantes diet is beneficial for kidney health. But the question is why is this diet good for kidneys? How does it support kidney function?

answer- The EAT-Lancet diet supports kidney function in several ways.

  • The plant-based proteins (pulses, nuts, seeds) present in it put less pressure on the kidneys than animal proteins.
  • High fiber food improves the gut microbiome (balance of microbes in the intestines). This reduces the production of toxins which reach the kidneys through the blood and cause damage to them.
  • The antioxidants and anti-inflammatory nutrients present in it reduce inflammation and protect kidney tissues from damage.

answer- Yes, this diet contains more fruits, vegetables, whole grains and pulses. It increases the amount of citrate in urine. Citrate is an element in which calcium sticks and forms stones.
