Schools Closed: The administration has been forced to take drastic measures to maintain peace and order in the Kashmir Valley. Following the news of the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, widespread protests have erupted in several parts of the Valley. Keeping in mind the safety of the students, the Jammu and Kashmir administration has ordered closure of all schools and colleges in the Kashmir Valley for two days. In fact, people have taken to the streets in areas like Srinagar and Budgam.
The administration says that this precautionary step has been taken to prevent any untoward incident. This will help keep the youth away from the violence of the protests. Security forces are currently on alert across the valley, and internet services are being monitored. The large crowds that have gathered to mourn and protest for Khamenei have posed a major law and order challenge for the administration. The two-day shutdown will also affect local examinations.
Following the death of Iran’s spiritual and supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, mass protests erupted in Shia-majority areas of Kashmir. A mixed effect of anger and sympathy is visible on the streets. The administration feared that the participation of students in these protests could worsen the situation. To mitigate this risk, the Divisional Commissioner’s office has ordered closure of all government and private schools as well as colleges for two days.
The sudden closure of schools has created problems for students who had to appear for unit tests or other local exams today or tomorrow. Many colleges have postponed their internal exams for the time being. The education department says that these two days will be made up by holding extra classes in the coming days, but the priority right now is the safety of the children. The decision to extend the school holidays will be made based on the current situation. Also, the University of Kashmir has canceled all its examinations scheduled for today, the new dates of which will be announced after the situation improves.
