Yash Johar, who said goodbye to this world at the age of 74 on 26 June 2004, gave new heights to Bollywood through the establishment of his films and Dharma Productions. Due to Madhubala, this producer had entered entry in films.
Yash Johar’s father opened a sweets shop named ‘Nanking Sweets’. Being the most educated among the nine siblings, Yash got the responsibility of handling the shop account, but his mind was not Rama in it. His mother understood his uneasiness and showed his way to Mumbai in view of his interest in acting. His mother encouraged Yash to step into the cinematic world.
On reaching Mumbai, Yash tried his hand in journalism and photography. In the 1950s, he tried to become a photographer in a newspaper, but it was not easy. One opportunity was found when he took a photo of Madhubala during the shooting of ‘Mughal-e-Azam’. Madhubala, who did not allow anyone to take photos easily. But Yash’s furnace was so impressed by English and educated personality that he allowed not only to take pictures. This meeting gave Yash the first break in the film industry.
Yash started his career in 1952 with Sunil Dutt’s production house ‘Ajanta Arts’, where he worked as an associate in films like ‘Mujhe Jeene Do’ and ‘Yeh Rasta Hain Pyar Ke’. After this he joined Devanand’s ‘Navketan Films’, where he took over the production in classic films like ‘Guide’, ‘Jewel Thef’, ‘Prem Pujari’ and ‘Hare Rama Hare Krishna’. He also made Amitabh from a friendly film.
But when he brought Agneepath with Amitabh, he also became a debtor because of Amitabh. The film flopped. Apart from this, his role in ‘Guide’ (1965) established him in the industry, which is one of the classic films of Indian cinema. In 1976, Yash gave a new dimension to his ambition and established ‘Dharma Productions’. His religious nature is reflected in the name of his production house. Dharma’s first film was ‘Dostana’ (1980), in which stars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shatrughan Sinha and Zeenat Aman worked.
Karan Johar and Dharma’s new era Yash Johar’s real heritage shine when his son Karan Johar commanded Dharma Productions. Karan’s first film ‘Kuch Kuch Hota Hai’ (1998) was a blockbuster, in which Shah Rukh Khan, Kajol and Rani Mukherjee are in the lead roles. Yash worked with his son in films like ‘Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Gum’ (2001) and ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ (2003). ‘Kal Ho Na Ho’ was Yash’s last film, which left a deep impression in the hearts of the audience. Yash’s films always showed the fabric of Indian culture, family value and emotions.
Yash’s personal life was also no less than a film story. He made the producer-director B.R. Married Chopra and Yash Chopra’s sister Hiru Johar. An anecdote is famous that Yash proposed to Heru in front of celebrities like Dilip Kumar, Devanand and Raj Kapoor. On 20 May 1971, both were tied in the knot. Yash Johar died on 26 June 2004 due to cancer and chest infection in Mumbai. After his death, Karan brought Dharma Productions to new heights. Today Dharma Productions is one of the biggest production houses of Bollywood.
