Former Indian coach Ravi Shastri believes that Virat Kohli still has 3-4 years of cricket left. But captain Rohit Sharma may have to reassess his future after the ongoing series against Australia given his long-standing struggle with form and technique in the format. India’s senior batsmen Rohit and Kohli have been facing criticism for their poor performance during the ongoing five-Test series against Australia.
Talking to Star Sports, Shastri said, ‘I think Virat will play for some time. Forget the way they’re coming out, or other things, whatever. I think he will play for the next three or four years. As far as Rohit is concerned, he has to make a decision. I think his footwork is not what it used to be. They probably delay playing shots at times. They will have to make a decision at the end of the series.’
Rohit has scored just 31 runs at an average of 6.20 in five innings and during that time he has scored 3, 6, 10, 3 and 9 runs which is the lowest average of any foreign captain on Australian soil. Despite the century in the Perth Test, Kohli’s performances have lacked consistency and so far he has played innings of 5, 100 not out, 7, 11, 3, 36 and 5 runs in the series.
Former all-rounder Irfan Pathan believes that if Rohit was not the captain of India, based on the current form, he would not get a place in the field of play. Pathan said, ‘A player who has scored almost 20,000 runs. However, the way Rohit is struggling, it seems that his form is not helping him at all. What is happening now is that he is the captain, so he is playing. If he wasn’t the captain, he might not be playing right now.’
