A Pune-based lawyer has filed a complaint seeking legal action against Hardik Pandya for allegedly desecrating the Indian national flag during India’s celebrations after winning the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The complainant has requested the police to register an FIR on this alleged incident.
The complaint was filed by lawyer Wajid Khan at the Shivaji Nagar police station. The lawyer alleged that Pandya wrapped the tricolor around himself while celebrating on the field with his girlfriend Mahika Sharma after India beat New Zealand in the final at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday. Speaking to ANI, Khan said that this action is tantamount to insulting the national flag.
“You must have seen the T20 World Cup here. Hardik Pandya was dancing with his girlfriend in celebration of his victory. The national flag was tied on his back… According to Section 2 of the National Flag Act, 1971, we must respect the dignity of the national flag. However, Hardik Pandya was so lost in his victory celebration that he lay down with his girlfriend wearing the national flag. I believe this national flag There is an insult to the flag,” Khan said.
“I have filed a complaint at the Shivaji Nagar police station. When I went to file the complaint, they told me that the incident happened there, not here. So I told them that the national flag is the symbol of the entire country, and we can file a complaint with the Shivaji Nagar police. They have accepted my complaint and provided me with a copy. Let’s see what happens next. I have filed the complaint,” he added.
The controversy came after India’s T20 World Cup victory over New Zealand, which led to emotional celebrations at the ground in Ahmedabad.
During the post-match celebrations, videos circulating on social media showed Pandya celebrating with Mahika Sharma as the Indian team basked in the historic win. In several clips, the couple was seen dancing, posing with the trophy and sharing emotional moments during the celebrations.
A viral video also showed the couple lying together on the podium structure during the victory ceremony while players and staff celebrated around them.
The clip quickly generated mixed reactions online. While some fans described the moment as a harmless celebration after a long and intense tournament, others felt that the victory lap should have been presented in a more formal manner.
In his complaint application, Khan alleged that Pandya wrapped the tricolor around his body while celebrating and behaved in a way that he believed denigrated the dignity of the national flag. The lawyer urged the police to investigate the matter under the laws related to respect for the national flag and take appropriate legal action.
